Weston’s One World After-School Programs
 
Weston Youth Services is pleased to offer WOW! After-School programs for students in Kindergarten through Second Grade at Hurlbutt Elementary School. Please note that enrollment is limited in order to keep class size small and classes will be filled on a first-come, first -served basis
 
Registration:
Online registration will open on Tuesday, November 12th at 10:01 p.m. If a program is full, you still may register and your child's name will automatically be placed on the wait-list (No payment is required at this time). If space does become available, you will be notified via email.
 
Special Note: 
If your child was waitlisted from a program in the fall, and that class is being offered in the winter, you will have the opportunity to register only for that class from 10:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6th through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday November 7th.  If you do not register during this early registration period, we cannot guarantee your child a space in that class.  A link will be emailed to any individuals eligible for early registration.
 
Important Note:
If you do not have an account established with Weston Youth Services, you will need to set up an account online once the registration systems opens at 10:01 p.m. on Tuesday,
November 12th. The system will ask for your email address and generate a temporary password which will then be emailed to you so you can proceed with registration.
 
Fees:
Please see each course listing for specific fees. ALL materials are included in class fee.
Financial Aid is available; please contact Allison Lisbon, Director of Social Services,
at 203-222-2663 if you would like to inquire about assistance.
 
Payment:
  • ALL payments must be made online by credit card via our secure site.
 
  • Full payment of program fees must be made within twenty-four (24) hours of registration.  The system has been set up to automatically delete unpaid registrations after twenty-four (24) hours.   When a registration has been deleted due to non-payment, a system-generated email will be sent stating:
"This is a notification that the registration for (registrants first name and last initial) has been deleted due to non-payment on (date and time that registration was deleted).”
 
Refund:
Once a class begins, we do not issue refunds or credits. If you cancel your child’s registration prior to the start of a program, you will be charged a $25.00 administrative and processing fee.                       

 
Program Dates:
Classes begin the week of January 6th  and run through the week of March 23rd, unless otherwise noted.
 
Class Length:
All classes are scheduled from 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm unless otherwise noted.  Please check individual programs for descriptions, grade eligibility, room assignments, start dates, and program end times.

Important information:
  • Alternate dismissal notes must be sent, in duplicate, every week to your child’s teacher for each program.  Please make a notation on your alternate dismissal notice if anyone, other than yourself is picking up your child at dismissal.  Additionally, given our unpredictable Weston weather, please indicate what your child’s dismissal plans are in the event of an unplanned after school activities cancellation.
  • In the event of an early dismissal due to inclement weather or any other school emergency, all after-school programs will be cancelled and the children will be sent home per school policy. In the event of a cancellation, we will send a reminder via email and also post this information on the Weston Youth Services website. If we are unable to contact you in the case of a last minute cancellation by an instructor, children will stay in the main office with the WOW! Supervisor until a parent arrives.  We will make every effort to make up missed classes due to cancellations.
  • There is no nurse on duty after normal school hours. In the event of illness or emergency treatment, we will call 911 and then contact parents, or the emergency contact if necessary. If your child has any special medical needs, please contact Charlene Monn at 203-222-2586 prior to the start of the session.
  • Weston Youth Services reserves the right to cancel a class due to lack of student enrollment.
  • If a student is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or withdraws from the school or the program, the parent forfeits the entire program fee.

Monday Programs
10-week session

NEW! “Board No More” (K thru 2nd grade)

Come join two of Hurlbutt’s very own teachers for an afternoon of fun and games! Turn off those IPads, phones, and videogames and come learn some new and exciting board games. You will practice turn-taking, rule-following, how to work collaboratively with others, and good sportsmanship. At the end of the program, you will even get the chance to design, create, and name your very own board game! Sign up now for Mondays after school!

Making Music! (K thru 2nd grade)

Explore the world of making music this winter! WOW! Music is a great way for students to discover their love of singing and playing instruments. Let’s sing with others using simple songs and rounds. Students will have the opportunity to enjoy free play with percussion instruments, xylophones, and even unique rhythm instruments like the cabasa and vibraslap! What a fabulous way to express yourself!  
 
Instructor:
Jessica Cardamone is the music teacher at Hurlbutt Elementary School. While she enjoys singing and playing games in class, she is very excited to share her love of making music in other ways and styles, such as with her saxophone or ukulele!
 
Fun with Fabric (1st & 2nd grade)

After a long day of school, come unwind with this hands-on activities program with Gabriela!  Students will work with different materials like cotton, wool, linen, felt, and yarn allowing them to experiment with textures and fabrics. New sewing skills, finger knitting and crocheting, braiding, and much more will be introduced to your child in this class.  Students will explore their creativity and craft fun accessories to wear and also make decorations for your home. Fun with Fabric really is fun!!!
 
Instructor: 
We’re thrilled to welcome Gabriela Low back to our WOW! after-school programs this winter. Gabriela discovered her love of crafts as a child in the Swiss school system. Today she enjoys sewing, knitting, and needlework, and is especially pleased when she sees a child’s enthusiastic discovery of their own creativity. Many students know Ms. Low as a substitute teacher in the Weston school.
 
Paint Draw & More!  (K thru 2nd grade)
Maximum Number of participants:  12 students

Paint, Draw & More! offers drawing and painting classes that allow your child to express their creativity, while we teach them technical skills that help them blossom and build self-esteem through their artistic accomplishments. Our classes are fun, engaging and each project is developed with your young artist in mind. Paint Draw & More! classes assist creative development and will enhance students' intellectual growth and understanding of math, history and the sciences. Drawing fundamentals like shape, contour, design, color and medium are progressively used every week so your child can create new and varied works of art they can be proud of, and excited to share. 
Note: Students can take this class continuously and never repeat a project!  
Note:  If your child cannot attend the Monday program, we also offer a Friday class!
 
Instructor:
Steve Burke has always been interested in the mechanics of how things work. He was a machinist at a small R+D firm where he worked with a variety of materials. Soon after, he began a home construction company specializing in design, restoration, additions and cabinetry. Using his expertise in design, mechanics, machining, and woodworking, helps broaden students’ perspective and better understand how things work.  .
 
 
Tuesday Programs

NEW! Animal Architects with LEGO Materials (K & 1st grade)

Let your imagination run wild as we design and build leaping dolphins, buzzing beehives, and towering giraffes. Play, create, and learn in a world inspired by the animal kingdom. Design and build as never before and explore your craziest ideas! Students can explore the endless creative possibilities of th LEGO building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor in this 1 ½ hour program.
Note: Projects will not go home with the children.

We’re so fortunate to have Judy Orr return to Hurlbutt this winter to teach yoga to our students!
Join her as she encourages children to explore and discover the mind and body connection in a fun-filled way. Judy takes a creative approach to yoga that can be very helpful for children whose bodies are still developing. The use of animated poses and basic stretching exercises promote strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques teach children how to focus, relax and develop self-control. Note: If your child cannot attend the Tuesday program, we’ll also be offering a Thursday class this winter!
Special Note: Students should bring their own yoga mat each week to class.
 
Instructor:
Judy is currently a 500Hr Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher specializing in Yin, Gentle, Power Vinyasa Flow, Y12SR for Addiction and Thai Yoga Bodywork.  Her approach to kids yoga is to “play” yoga with children by integrating storytelling, games, and music that foster a loving environment for movement, concentration, and relaxation.
 
Karate Club (K thru 2nd grade)

Georgetown Martial Arts returns to our winter WOW! programs! This NON-competitive, core-strengthening exercise is good for beginners, intermediates, and advanced students. Sensei Kristin focuses on helping students understand and use martial arts to develop self-discipline, self-control, confidence, focus, and respect for others in a fun and safe environment.
Note: Please specify weight and height on the registration form if your child is ordering a whiteGI- uniform. If your child already has his/her own uniform, the price of the class will be adjusted to $192.00. Advanced karate students ordering a black gi should order directly through Georgetown Martial Arts and Sensei Dave.
Note: If your child cannot make the Tuesday class, we also offer a Wednesday and Thursday program! Special Note:  Students may be invited to test for an advanced belt pending successful completion of learned techniques.  Parents will be notified directly by Georgetown Martial Arts.  Please know that there is an additional cost for the test, payable to Georgetown Martial Arts, and is not part of the WOW! fee.

Sensei Kristin Jackson is a 2nd degree black belt in the art of Shaolin Kempo and earned her 1st Degree black belt under Master Vincent Destefamos/ She has trained under Dave Chapman for the last three years where she earned her 2nd Degree black belt. Sensei Kristin also holds a green sash in the art of Shaolin Kung-fu and has taught children Shaolin Kempo and continues to teach alongside Sensei Dave at Georgetown Martial Arts.

Magic Show on March 24th   
 
We can’t teach you to make your little sister disappear—that wouldn’t be right!—but we can reveal the secrets of the professional magician in this well-known and popular after school program. Experience the wonder of magic as you learn the ancient art of prestidigitation. Disappearing coins, reappearing scarves, card tricks, and more magical stuff awaits your Jr. Genie! Each week students will receive tricks and materials to take home. What a great way to  build self-confidence, develop stage presence, and improve presentation, public speaking, and leadership skills, while having a blast!  Note: Any students repeating this class will receive new tricks and will help as magic assistants for new students.  Note:  If your child cannot attend the Tuesday program, we’re magically offering a Friday class!
 
Instructor:
Nisan Eventoff, internationally known master magician, has never made his little sister disappear, but he has been known to pull a rabbit out of a hat every now and then. He has appeared in movies, T.V. and theatre.  He is a life member of the prestigious “Magic Castle” in Los Angeles.

 
 
Wednesday Programs
11-week session

Intro to Theater (1st & 2nd grade)

We are pleased to bring Intro to Theater back this winter to our family of WOW! after school programs.  This class will introduce children to elements of theater in a fun and creative way. Children will bring their own characters to life by creating the character, writing a short script, and putting together costumes and set pieces all while learning basic theater terminology. Our final class will be an informal showcase to perform for family and friends.
 
Instructor: 
Amy MacRae discovered her love of theater and acting as a child, playing Big Bird in her preschool play. Currently, the Weston mom of three has brought her love and experience of the craft to producing the WMS and WIS theater productions, and also an independent film this past summer. 
 
NEW! Mad Science Presents Winter STEM Lab (K & 1st grade)

This winter come mix up some science with Mad Science in our Laboratory! Offered to students in Grades K & 1, we’ll make some snow, batter up some slime, and discover all the colors and lights that make a rainbow glow! We will dig deep to find out what is healthy for our bodies and all about rocks and minerals! Each class, we will explore a different science topic that is interesting and hands on for our students! Each participant receives specially designed take homes that help extend learning at home!

Chess Club (1st & 2nd grade)

We are excited to welcome back the Chess Club of Fairfield County! This course for beginners builds logical and critical thinking, helps develop patience and concentration, and informs students about the history and evolution of chess strategy. Students will learn the basics of the game of chess, including but not limited to board set up, the value of pieces, elementary tactics, and endgame strategy.

NEW! Creative Paper Crafts with Meg Murphy (K thru 2nd grade)

Have you ever made anything with paper pulp? We have and it’s so much fun!  We start by using old newspapers, magazines, and paper and let our imagination go wild!  Students will have a blast learning how to make paper pulp and turn it into imaginative works of art that include card making, plates, bowls, art paper, and more!  A sure enjoyment for your art oriented child.
 
Instructor: 
Meg Murphy, who many of our students know from clay sculpting, is pleased to offer this creative after school program.  Meg attended Silvermine School of the Arts where she studied fundamentals of design, drawing, ceramics and metal sculptures. She is also an accomplished stain glass designer as well as a landscape designer.

Level up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as Motorcycles, Aircraft Carriers, Conveyor Belts, and Rail Racers! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment for the 1 ½ program that ends at 4:45 p.m. Note: The curriculum changes every season so students who did our courses in fall or previous years would see new projects. Special Note:  Projects will not go home with students!

Get ready to put your science googles on and dig deep into science! Let’s see what you can invent, build, zap, and what science experiments you can create! This program will cover all the ins and outs of science and turn you into a master scientist! Everything from gears to lasers to circuits to rockets to chemical reactions; this class has it all! See hands on, and bring home, things that are gooey, zoom, crank, pop, flash, boom, and spark! Be ready, this class will constantly surprise you with all our Mad Science Top Secrets!

Children love to cook and are drawn to preparing food with an amazing sense of curiosity and respect. The most effective way to have children embrace healthy foods is to give them the opportunity to prepare it with their own hands and have a pride of accomplishment. Now on Fridays, students in Grades K-2 will get involved in preparing and eating healthy foods such as “salad people”, confetti rice with vegetables, and lots more. Through games, songs, and stories, coupled with tastings, students will expand their knowledge and have an appreciation for healthy eating! Note: Students who took this class in the fall will see new projects this winter.
SPECIAL NOTE: Items used in this class may contain nuts or gluten or may be processed on shared equipment with nuts or gluten.  Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate individual dietary needs or restrictions.
 
Instructor:
Gabriela Low discovered her love of crafts as a child in the Swiss school system. Instructor:
Born in Sicily, Marie Goodwin migrated to New York as a child. It took a while to learn English and she started painting as a way to find solace and joy. She returned to Italy to receive her BFA and teaching degree from Universita Delle Belle Arte in Palermo majoring in Fine Art and in Architecture. While in Italy, she studied frescos, which became the basis for her love of murals. Marie has a love for all creative outlets, styles, mediums and subjects. You can find her painting a portrait or a ceiling. She was commissioned to paint the interior walls of a church and taught Art in a private elementary school. Marie apprenticed with Franco Marino, won International awards for her work, and continues to create fine art. Marie loves Art and the process of creating, she hopes to inspire a love of Art to others.
